§ 2-166. Reduction in grade of chief and upper-level officials.

  • To the extent authorized by law and this division, and subject to section 2-167(l), the police chief and members of the police department in an upper-level policy-making position, and the fire chief and members, voluntary or otherwise, of the fire department in an upper-level policy-making position, shall be subject to reduction in grade by the town council for any reason that the town council considers sufficient. For purposes of this section, an upper-level policy-making position shall be the office next below the chief which is actually occupied by a police officer or a fire officer. This section shall not apply to an employee in an upper-level policy-making position next below that of the chief of police who served in such position as of January 1, 1982, without his written consent. Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, the salary of a fire chief who is reduced in grade pursuant to action by the town council as authorized in this section shall not terminate for an additional 60 days.
